Artist Biography
Tom Burckhardt began a collaboration with Shark’s in February 2001 at our Holualoa, Hawaii studio. In his prints, as in his paintings, Burckhardt combines figurative and abstract elements. He says, “My aim is to make the more descriptive elements feel abstract and to push the abstract elements into the real world of space and gravity.”
Burckhardt is interested in art from all cultures. Especially fascinating for the artist are symbols and narrative forms that, independent of their context, can seem mysterious and indecipherable. Taking direction from this observation, Burckhardt often appropriates imagery to be used abstractly and constructs a unique visual language. The artist’s influences include his extensive travels, Mayan ceramics, Asian art, the New York School and fun house painting.
