Artist Biography

James Surls makes powerful, mysterious sculptures, drawings, and prints. His anthropomorphic forms are intellectually challenging and visually compelling and, his drawing is energetic and direct.

James Surls made three lithographs at Shark’s in 1999. Taking advantage of the translucent nature of Thai Mulberry paper, the artist used several reds, printed on both sides of the sheet, to create a deep rich color over a fluid white line. Blood Flower and Flesh and Blood celebrate our connections to life and family.
