Howard Finster

Born in 1916
Died 2001

Artist Biography

For forty years Howard Finster was a minister. After retiring, his Summerville, Georgia garden became his primary focus. Dedicated to his religious beliefs and now known as Paradise Gardens Park and Museum, it is a fantastic world created from found objects—fragments of mirrors, salvaged refrigerator doors, concrete walls, hubcaps, mosaic cement paths, and Coca-Cola bottles.

Finster created thousands of works of art in his lifetime. Pop culture icons and religious heavyweights often appear in his art. With intense detail, written verse, and concurrent use of multiple perspective strategies, the artist introduced the world to outsider art. In 1982 Finster created his first lithograph ever at Shark’s Ink. Dream or vision-like, his prints are a continuation of his other creative works.
