Artist Biography

Jane Hammond is an alchemist. Her lexicon of nearly 300 “characters” come from a wide variety of sources: children’s books, books on magic and puppetry, medical journals, technical manuals, matchbook covers, labels, and all variety of charts and maps. In combination, this visual shorthand transforms paintings, drawings, and prints into newfound messages and magical new forms.

Exploring mythology, language, culture, and semiotics, the artist’s prints at Shark’s have also explored the possibilities of printmaking itself. Utilizing die cut patterns, silkscreen grounds, three-dimensional constructions, and metallic inks meant to tarnish over time, Hammond has shown she is just as inventive in process as she is in form.
