Artist Biography

Janis Provisor’s abstract prints, while based in landscape, express an interior world. Hints of natural elements serve as metaphors in the artist’s spiritual exploration of form and life. Emerging from an intuitive system of mark-making and collage, Provisor’s prints present visions of beauty and the Sublime.

Provisor first collaborated with Master Printer Bud Shark in 1988 and has since produced monotypes, lithographs, and woodcuts. A variety of printed marks are utilized to achieve her imagery: spaghetti-thin carved lines, flat washes of color, and painterly brush strokes. By combining printmaking techniques and collage elements, the artist achieves tactile surfaces which serve as meditative, resting peaks in fields of color.

Selected Collections: Oakland Art Museum, Oakland, CA; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Richmond Art Museum, Richmond, Virginia; The Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany.
